What is Lane Keeping Assist? How Does the Mercedes-Benz Lane Keeping Assist Work?

Veering out of ones lane, whether due to drowsiness or inattentiveness, is far too often the cause of accidents. It’s unfortunate when these are simple mistakes that could have easily been avoidable. Lane Keeping Assist is intended to warn the driver when they begin unintentionally leaving their lane so they can correct the error before it’s too late. A camera inside the front windscreen takes a look at the road ahead and determines where the lanes are while a control unit monitors the vehicle’s positioning as well as the driver’s behavior. Because of that, the system can pick up on intentional lane departures and other movements such as steering into a bend, sudden acceleration, pulling onto a motorway, etc. and then will not alert the driver that they have left their lane.

How Does Lane Keeping Assist Alert the Driver?

When the system detects that the vehicle has inadvertently left the assigned lane, the steering wheel will vibrate gently and briefly to warn the driver. In order for the system to work, though, the vehicle must be traveling above 60 kilometers an hour (about 37 mph). With the upgrade to Active Lane Keeping Assist, the system will not only alert the driver but pull the vehicle back into its lane if necessary.
